North Greenbush MapInfo Corp. beat earnings projections for the quarter, and on Thursday upped its expectations for the year, after finding looser purse strings among its customers.

The mapping and database software firm, based at Rensselaer Technology Park in North Greenbush, posted $637,000 in net income, or 4 cents a share, for the fiscal first quarter that ended Dec. 31. That was a penny-a-share better than analyst estimates and 2 cents higher than the company's own guidance.

It was the third straight profitable quarter for the company, which had been hit hard by a two-year downturn in technology spending. …

Symyx Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq:SMMX), Santa Clara, Calif.,has reported financial results for the third quarter ended September 30, 2005.

Revenue for the third quarter was $31.7 million, an increase of over 60% compared with revenue of $19.6 million in the third quarter of 2004. Pro forma income from operations for the third quarter was $9.0 million, compared with $3.9 million in the same period last year, an increase of over 130%. Third quarter pro forma earnings per diluted share were $0.19 compared with $0.08 in the same period last year, an increase of approximately 140%.

Revenue for the third quarter included $14.5 million in service revenue derived from research collaborations and software consulting services. Symyx grew research collaborations during the third quarter through the expansion of an existing collaboration. Product revenue for the quarter was $11.4 million, reflecting Discovery Tools(R) shipments to Exxon Mobil, The Dow Chemical Company and Boehringer Ingelheim. THE Cape Law Society has accused two attorneys - Anthony Reynolds and Michael Reynolds - in the Western Cape High Court of breaking the law by failing to apply for the necessary certificate from the society that is required for them to practise law.

It further accuses their firm - Roup Reynolds & Associates - of having irregular audit reports and of forging the name of the auditor under whose name the reports were submitted.

The forgery allegations have since been referred to the police.
