Tas: Police resume search for missing man

HOBART, April 16 AAP - Police are searching for a New Zealand man missing off Tasmania'ssouth coast after being washed off a 40-metre cliff during high seas late yesterday.

Acting Sergeant Ken Sellars said an air and sea search for the man, who was part ofa marine research group on Pedra Blanca Rock, a small island 25km south of Tasmania, beganat first light today.

He said a police helicopter and rescue launch had commenced a search about 5am (AEST),joining another vessel which had stayed out throughout the night.

Acting Sergeant Sellars said the incident happened just before 4pm yesterday as thegroup was conducting research on seals in the area.

"We understand there were very high seas, he lost his footing and washed off the rocks,"

Acting Sergeant Sellars said.

"It was reported he could have fallen 40 metres down a rocky cliff and into the water."
